When I first saw Strippopoly in a local sex shop, it definitely stood out among the other games - the bright, bold title grabs you attention. The "Opoly" portion of the name immediately triggers a flash back to the original, familiar game. The packaging also seemed to be fairly good quality and the weight indicated it had some substance in it. The back of the box includes a realistic view of all the game elements so you can get a good sense of what you are getting. The price was a tad high but I was intrigued and figured my wife would enjoy playing it. As a designer, I was very interested in discovering how the game play was adapted for erotic adult fun.

At the checkout, the sales girl informed me that the game "is really more for swingers". Maybe I just look like a happily married guy or maybe it was the wedding ring or the three other relationship enhancement games I was buying at the same time. Apparently she had purchased the game to play with her boy friend but they were a little disappointed since they weren't swingers either. Undaunted, I purchased it anyway (after briefly discussing some of her concerns).

After opening the box, looking through the contents and reading the rules, here are some initial impressions:

• Box cover indicates 2-8 players but the rules state "two to four couples!"
• Contents look exactly like that shown on the back of the box - quality similar to other Opoly style products:
  • Relatively low quality plastic dice and tokens
  • No houses or hotels (not applicable to the game)
  • Fairly sturdy game board - medium quality
  • Glossy graphic print laminated to the board
  • Simplistic mono-colored paper money (normal)
  • Standard quality deed cards
  • Large number of his/her cards - simple readable text
• One sheet of rules (4 half page segments) - assumes you know the basics
• Some terminology inconsistencies (rent or fine when landing on a property)
• Similar property color scheme and layout relative to the classic game
• Property valuations seem arbitrarily assigned (no progressive increase)
• Railroad locations are replaced with His & Her activity cards
• Community Chest, Chance & Utilities are replaced with Go Back/Forward

Strippopoly Stripped Bare

The basic premise of the game is that you are buying and selling sex websites and making money when players visit your properties (websites). Stripping occurs when you land on a website owned by another player and when you get sent to the Strip Club. His/Her activity cards provide opportunities for more erotic interaction between the players. In general, this all seems well and good. However, as I dug deeper into the game, I discovered a number of poorly designed features that make the game rather disappointing. Although playable, there are some improvements that I believe will make it even more fun and exciting to play.

Let's take a look at some of the design issues and various ideas to fix, minimize or eliminate them (see full rules):

• Porn Website Theme: All the properties represent sex websites however there is nothing in the game that adds to this theme. Granted the focus is on stripping each other but pretending to be a porn mogul could add some additional excitement - bankrupt all the other aspiring porn producers and have them stripping for you instead. The activity cards and even the rules could include appropriate flavor text to at least create some coherence and consistency to this theme.
• Site Fines: The rules reference "collecting rent" and "pay the fine" when landing on an owned website. In my experience, visiting a sex website may involve paying a fee but definitely not rent or a fine - the terminology does not make sense. Easy enough to overlook this but, with a little creativity, revenue from these websites could have been better integrated with the theme.
• Stripping Too Fast: Although the intended purpose is to strip each other, elements in the game require just too much undressing and redressing. After a point, any thrill of anticipation to view naked flesh gets lost. Also, if you follow the rules, you could become completely naked on your very first turn (land on and pick a his/her card that sends you to the Strip Club or roll lots of successive doubles). You are required to completely undress at the Strip Club and must remove an item of clothing for each double rolled. And, if you land on someone's website you must also remove one or two items of clothing. There are various opportunities to put clothing back on but, again, the undressing/redressing activities are not tied into the theme of the game.
• Stripping as Punishment: It is curious that the game tends to associate stripping activities with penalties. Granted, stripping as a thrilling forfeit has its place in certain types of games, but in the adult industry you tend to get paid for stripping. For instance, when you land on another player's website, you must pay them money and remove an item of clothing. Based on the theme of the game, it seems more appropriate for you to pay the owner some money and they remove an item of clothing. Also, rather than stripping at the Strip Club, pot money as though you are paying for live entertainment. When someone lands on Take Over Night Club they receive the money in the pot if they remove their clothing. Effectively, the more you strip, the more money you make.
• Activity Cards: The His and Her activity cards have potential to include distinctly male and female erotic activities tied to the game theme. Unfortunately, many were exact duplicates and most did not contribute to the flavor of the game concept. The Softcore, Hardcore and Extreme labels on the cards intended to provide 3 levels of play is a good concept. However, there is no smooth progression from low level frisky play to intense erotic stimulation. Some of the cards seemed a little corny too. A greater variety of more interesting foreplay type activities tied into the theme would definitely improve the game.
• Back/Forward: A pet peeve I have with many simplistic board games is the use of go back or forward locations with fixed numbers. Especially irritating are ones that move you to another move space. Unfortunately Strippopoly uses 8 of these locations. Although these spaces could have been more creatively utilized, a simple fix involves moving back/forward based on the roll of a single die.

As mentioned, the theme of the game seems to be sex websites but nothing is done to integrate this element other than for location titles. It is curious that the designer of the game didn't just use names of strip joints instead. Although Strippopoly is a great name, a more appropriate title might have referenced the cyber sex theme.

There are a few other minor issues but, in general, the game is not well suited for play by a single couple as is. Even with multiple couples playing, the game could use some improvements. It definitely has potential as a starting concept and a base on which new rules can be applied. With a few tweaks to the board design, a slightly revised theme, adapted rules for better integration of the theme, a few new game elements and new sets of cards, you can transform your Strippopoly game into one that is much more playable for two or more people.
